Good News Friday 3/28/14

I've missed a few weeks of Good News posts.  This has been a good week.  Welcome back, good news.

Let's see......what has happened this week:

1.  I (finally) got a washer!  This is more exciting than I ever imagined.  I washed just about everything that has been waiting for a washer.  All the clothes, linens and a comforter!!!  No flooding!  No thump, thump, thump as it tries to move into the middle of the room.  Nothing!  And it sings to me.  This is love.



2.  I remembered why I actually like being an interpreter this week.  Most of my work like is pretty routine.  I stepped outside of my familiar world and tried something different.  And I was able to work with another interpreter from another country.  That was so cool!  Fabulous exercise for my brain and confidence level.

3.  Without divulging specifics, I learned that the mommy network is strong and I'm happy to be part of it.  When I need just about anything (most recently a plumber), I go to the network and get the help I need.  I've used it for everything from services to medical recommendations.  This week, I made a comment to a friend (not a mom!) about an issue I'm dealing with and within 30 mins, another mom reached out to me with advice and support.  It's nice to know I'm not alone.

4.  My blog post last week was picked up my by ex-husband and his girlfriend and reached a lot of people!  It wasn't quite a record for this blog but it was close!  That was an exercise 

5.  I practiced letting go.  I let my kids go to the movies in downtown Silver Spring without me.  Without an adult (little did I know another mom didn't leave the theater!).  Then they went shopping and eating - all alone.  Anyone who knows me knows I have control issues.  But I also valued the freedom my mom gave me when I was young (I was riding the train to Philly alone by age 10).  I want them to experience that.  It all went well.  Whew!

It's been another crazy, busy week.  But I'm remembering to acknowledge the good when it comes, realize the bad doesn't last forever and be grateful for it all.

    Hooray for the Mom Network and also for me finally figuring out I can subscribe to your posts by email. Huzzah! Hooray also for you letting your girls have some independence. I know it must have been super hard for you, but so so awesome for them.

I think something is wrong with me.  Other people have have goals.  Bucket Lists.  Must-do things.  I don't really have that. Well, I sort of do. I've been thinking about this for a few weeks, ever since Alissa over at www.clevercompass.com came up with the idea of doing a post about our bucket lists.  I feel like there's something wrong with me.  I have never had a bucket list. Now, that said, I've had a few things that I've always wanted to do.  I've come up with three I'll make public and one that is a secret.  When I make that one happen, I'll announce it from the rooftops.  Trust me. A Life Well Lived....so far

Huh.  Alissa over at Clever Compass and the other bloggers came up with another stumper for me:  what have I do with my life that makes me feel proud.  Funny, one of my girls asked me about that the other day.  Finding an answer to that question is kinda hard. So let me see what I can come up with. Hmmmm.....what am I proud of?  Oh!  I have a few! I started my first business, Discovery Records, at the age of 19 with a $250 investment from my brother. I scared myself silly by flying to Poland to meet a guy I dated for about a month 6 years earlier when I did a short student exchange program in Germany.  We met in Poland (yes, we recognized each other) and went to the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz and Austria (and a bunch of other places) so I could see where my family lived and possibly died. Wacky Hair Day

Today is Wacky Hair Day in at the girls' school.  This is a yearly event, one that I find odd.  I get spirit week - it breaks up the monotony that is school.  But it is weird to see kids going to school in pajamas or with green spiked hair.  It was odder to see teachers all dressed up.  But it's all good. This is the only part of the week my kids regularly and excitedly participate in.  We've been doing this since kindergarten.  It always involves color and usually hair teasing.  Sometimes braids. Sometimes other adornments.
