Friday 5 - Summer traditions

Anyone who knows me knows that summer is my favorite time of the year.  The days are long and warm, the flowers are pretty, and it's just a happy time.

Alissa over at Clever Compass (www.clevercompass.com) picked the topic of Summer Traditions for this weeks Friday 5.  To limit it to 5 will be tough.....

1.  Fireworks.  On the fourth of July and every other time I can find them.  I am a fireworks junkie (others use a different, not inaccurate word).  I travel for fireworks.  And I never leave until I'm 110% sure they're completely done.

2.  Piggies in the sand.  I love beaches.  Ocean City, NJ is my beach of choice (my kids concur) but really I don't turn down a trip to any beach.  We go shark tooth hunting at Chesapeake Beach.  Any beach is our friend.

3.  The Montgomery County Fair.  We haven't missed one since my kids were born.  And I had been going for years before that.  I miss the pig made of butter but we go every year to see if it returns.  It was at the fair I learned not to slap a cow on the ass.  They don't like that.


4.  Cooking out and catching fireflies.  I love to cook out, though I'm not great at it.  I love to catch fireflies, though it makes me feel guilty.  Now that my kids are older, I don't know that they'll still want to do it but we've done it for years.

5.  Looking for deer and other animals.  Most evenings, I try to make a ride along Sligo Creek Parkway part of our way home.  We count deer, see herons, turtles, foxes if we're lucky and hear woodpeckers.

I love summer.  It's my favorite time of year.

    I LOVE all of these things too... fireflies especially.

    You should come out to my hometown of Bay City, MI for the fireworks festival. It's HUGE. 3 nights of fireworks, and the Grand-Finale last night is usually about an hour long!

    Agreed, you should definitely come to Bay City for the fireworks!

    Love your summer traditions. Liam and I love both the State Fair and 4-H fair which both happen weeks apart not far from us.

    I looked up the festival - agreed! I need to go there! I've never been to Michigan....I see a road trip in my future....

I think something is wrong with me.  Other people have have goals.  Bucket Lists.  Must-do things.  I don't really have that. Well, I sort of do. I've been thinking about this for a few weeks, ever since Alissa over at www.clevercompass.com came up with the idea of doing a post about our bucket lists.  I feel like there's something wrong with me.  I have never had a bucket list. Now, that said, I've had a few things that I've always wanted to do.  I've come up with three I'll make public and one that is a secret.  When I make that one happen, I'll announce it from the rooftops.  Trust me. A Life Well Lived....so far

Huh.  Alissa over at Clever Compass and the other bloggers came up with another stumper for me:  what have I do with my life that makes me feel proud.  Funny, one of my girls asked me about that the other day.  Finding an answer to that question is kinda hard. So let me see what I can come up with. Hmmmm.....what am I proud of?  Oh!  I have a few! I started my first business, Discovery Records, at the age of 19 with a $250 investment from my brother. I scared myself silly by flying to Poland to meet a guy I dated for about a month 6 years earlier when I did a short student exchange program in Germany.  We met in Poland (yes, we recognized each other) and went to the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz and Austria (and a bunch of other places) so I could see where my family lived and possibly died. I've interpreted for Paul McCartney (a few times!), at one of President Clinton's Inaugural Balls, for Mrs. Clinton, for the births of 8 babies, THE CURE!!...

Grills and teeth

Today was the day to get things done.  I almost bailed and went off to play but I didn't.  Yay for me. I continued down the Road To Being A Grown-up by getting a grill.  I am so silly happy about this.  I was going to do it last year but I decided to re-do my girls' room instead.  So we lived without a grill.  And they live with me bitching when I see their messy room and think I gave up a grill for that.  Now I will stop bitching.  Okay, no, I won't.  But I'll stop being cranky about it. I liked the old grill - which I got from someone on craigslist.  Little did I know I bought the wrong grill cover and rust devoured some important parts of it.  It was a good grill while it lasted. But now I have a shiny new grill!  And I don't have to choose between gas or charcoal.   IT DOES BOTH!   It's a hybrid!  I can't wait to try it!
